What is TPU and Why Choose It?

Our TPU 3D printing service offers a unique combination of flexibility, durability, and abrasion resistance. Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) is a rubber-like material suitable for creating functional parts that must endure repeated bending, compression, or stretching. For our processes we use TPU 95A.

TPU is often selected for components like gaskets, seals, protective covers, grips, and wear-resistant enclosures. It maintains elasticity over time and performs well in both industrial and consumer product settings.

TPU printing is the go-to choice when your application demands impact resistance, flexibility, and mechanical strength.

Where TPU Works Best

TPU 3D printing is a good fit for parts that need controlled flex, soft contact, or impact protection. It works well when a rigid plastic would be too hard, brittle, or unforgiving for the assembly.

Flexible seals, gaskets, and soft interfaces

Use TPU 95A for gaskets, pads, sleeves, and soft interface parts that need to compress slightly between harder components.

Robotics prototype parts

For robotics teams, TPU is useful for gripper pads, bumpers, feet, cable relief, protective covers, and flexible fixtures. For robot assemblies that also need rigid housings, brackets, fixtures, or SLS nylon components, see our robotic 3D printing page.

Protective and wear-contact parts

TPU can also work for soft-touch grips, cushioning features, covers, and wear-contact surfaces.

When to choose another material

TPU may not work well for sharp fine details, highly rigid parts, or long-term UV exposure. For outdoor robotics housings or weather-resistant covers, ASA 3D printing may be a better choice.

Examples of 3D Printed TPU Parts

Explore how 3D printing TPU is used across different industries. These examples highlight the material’s flexibility, toughness, and mechanical stability, making it suitable for vibration-dampening parts, protective housings, functional seals, and wearable prototypes.

Pros and Cons of TPU

TPU is a flexible and durable thermoplastic widely used in 3D printing for applications that demand impact resistance and mechanical elasticity. Below are practical considerations to help determine if TPU is right for your project.

Turnarounds and Delivery Options for TPU Printing

Technical Specifications Table for 3D Printed TPU Parts

We use TPU 95A, a thermoplastic polyurethane with a Shore hardness of 95A. It offers a practical combination of flexibility and stability, making it a suitable option for parts that are made using FDM 3D printing technology and need moderate elasticity and wear resistance. TPU 95A performs reliably in applications involving repeated movement, cushioning, or contact, such as sleeves, housings, or vibration-dampening features.
