When Urethane Casting Works Best

Urethane casting is well-suited when you need functional prototypes or short-run parts without the high upfront cost of injection molding. It offers flexibility in material selection, fine detail reproduction, and a faster turnaround compared to traditional manufacturing.

Typical use cases include

  • Pre-production models to evaluate form and function

  • Appearance models with custom finishes for presentations or demos

  • Bridge production while waiting for tooling

  • Low-volume manufacturing for market testing

  • Parts with elastomeric or rigid properties depending on your needs

  • Projects requiring color matching, inserts, or texture replication

If you’re working on a project that needs molded-quality parts quickly and affordably, urethane casting delivers impressive results without large minimum orders.

Materials and Finishes for Cast Urethane Parts

Our urethane casting service uses a wide range of materials and finishing techniques to meet functional and visual requirements. Depending on your specifications, we can deliver parts with rigid or flexible properties and surface finishes in matte or gloss.

Material Options

  • General-purpose resin (similar to ABS)

  • Glass-filled nylon for increased stiffness

  • TPE-like elastomers for wearables, hand grips, gaskets, and more

  • Polycarbonate-like materials

  • Clear or translucent urethane casting materials (similar to PMMA)

  • Heat-resistant options resembling PU or POM

  • Specialized materials: food-grade, conductive, fire-retardant, low-density, and materials that mimic wax, epoxy, ceramics, and more

Finishes Options

  • Matte or gloss surface textures

  • Custom painting and color matching

  • Light post-processing available upon request

How Urethane Casting Works Step by Step

Our urethane casting services follow a precise multi-stage process to ensure every part meets visual and mechanical requirements. Below we describe how we cast polyurethane parts from your design.

1. Master Pattern Creation

We start with a high-quality master model, which serves as the base for the silicone mold. Most often, we use 3D printing to create detailed prototypes from smooth or lightly textured materials, such as resin or nylon SLS.

2. Pattern Finishing and Prep

The master pattern is carefully finished to meet your surface expectations. Polishing or texturing is applied based on the required final appearance. This step ensures the silicone mold captures the desired surface definition.

3. Silicone Mold Fabrication

We then produce a flexible silicone mold around the prepared pattern. The mold captures every detail, including fine surface textures and geometries, allowing for accurate replication.

4. Casting and Production

After curing, the mold is ready for use. We cast urethane parts by pouring liquid polyurethane into the mold cavity. We can match part color, stiffness, and finish as needed. One silicone mold typically supports short production runs of up to 20–25 cast polyurethane parts.
